Trump Says Military Leaders Start Wars for Profit

Trump says that military leaders start wars for profit. What happened?

Summary

In an address on Monday, Trump said, “I’m not saying the military’s in love with me. The soldiers are. The top people in the Pentagon probably aren’t because they want to do nothing but fight wars so all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy.”

  • The statement is somewhat reminiscent of a President Dwight Eisenhower’s Farewell Address on 17 January 1961, when he warned Americans about the military-industrial complex in America.
  • For most of his presidency, Trump has positioned himself as a favorite among troops, despite consistently picking fights with and receiving disapproval from veterans and military leaders.

reporting from the left side of the aisle

  • Points out that the people Trump is condemning are his own appointees.
  • Reminds us of the times that Trump has catered to defense contractors throughout his presidency
  • Frames the entire address as “combative” towards troops and brave military leaders

  • Portrays the statement as a vicious attack against the troops
  • Plays up the correlation with Eisenhower’s speech, pointing out that perhaps Trump is onto something by being anti-establishment
  • Portrays Trump as big-headed for assuming soldiers love him
