Out with the Old, In with the New – Trump’s New Legal Team Announced

With a week to go before Trump’s second impeachment trial begins, a shakeup in Trump’s legal team is making headlines. While mainstream media acknowledge Trump’s likely acquittal, some are extrapolating the story into doom and gloom for the GOP.

Within hours of announcing the departure of his attorneys preparing for the upcoming impeachment trial, former President Donald Trump already has a new legal team.

David Schoen and Bruce L. Castor Jr. have been hired as Trump’s top attorneys to lead the former president’s defense in the impeachment trial slated to begin February 9th.
Two years ago, Schoen was in talks with Jeffrey Epstein to take over his defense team before Epstein was found dead a week later in his prison cell.
Castor was previously a Pennsylvania district attorney who declined to charge Bill Cosby for sexual assault in 2005.
According to Politico, Trump’s former team wanted to focus on refuting claims the president was responsible for the January 6^th attack on the Capitol while Trump would have rather focused on claims of fraud related to last year’s election.

CNN’s coverage colored the story as though Trump has been backed into a corner after he “struggled to find lawyers willing to take his case” and that the Republican Party is fractured and “[struggling] to find its voice” post-Trump.
A rundown of coverage of the story by Vox characterized the developments as a disintegration of President Trump’s defense as Democrats are preparing their arguments.
NY Magazine wrote that while there is “next to no chance” enough Republican senators will join Democrats to convict the former president, the tumult of Trump’s legal team “demonstrates that the dysfunction, disarray, and misplaced attention” that came to define Trump’s term in office.

Newsmax highlighted the legal experience of Schoen and Castor without mentioning their high profile cases like Epstein or Cosby, saying Schoen has represented victims of terrorism and that he “focuses on civil rights litigation.”
Reporting from Fox News mentioned there were five Republican senators (without naming them) siding with Democrats on moving forward with impeachment.
It appears as though Trump’s new attorneys will avoid talking about fraud claims surrounding the 2020 presidential election according to reporting by The Daily Caller.
