New York Attorney General Tish James sued former President Donald Trump, his children, and his company for business fraud on Wednesday.

Summary

New York Attorney General Tish James sued former President Donald Trump, his children, and his company for business fraud on Wednesday.

  • The lawsuit alleges Trump, his children Ivanka, Donald Jr., and Eric, and other top executives lied about the value of the company’s properties to secure favorable loan terms and tax benefits.
  • The New York attorney general said her office found more than 200 instances of “misleading asset valuations” with 23 of those assets “grossly and fraudulently inflated.”
  • James claimed her three-year civil investigation uncovered “years of illegal conduct to inflate his net worth, to deceive banks.” She is asking that the Trumps be removed from their businesses allegedly engaging in fraud and to be prohibited from being a corporate officer in any New York-registered corporation.
  • The attorney general’s office cannot file criminal charges. James is seeking $250 million in damages and said she referred alleged violations of federal law to federal prosecutors and the IRS.

  • The New York Times noted the punishments requested by James could get tossed out in state court and her case could be “difficult to prove” due to the subjective nature of property valuations and disclaimers on financial disclosure statements.
  • CNN wrote James’ decision to name Trump’s children as co-defendants makes the civil lawsuit a “threat to Trump different in kind than anything he’s ever faced before” and predicted it would leave the former President feeling “cornered” and “angry.”
  • The Washington Post observed the list of properties that Trump allegedly overvalued includes Mar-a-Lago in Florida, his former D.C. hotel in the Old Post Office building, and his Seven Springs estate in New York State.

  • Per Fox News, former President Donald Trump called the lawsuit “ridiculous” at a time when crime in New York is at the “highest level it has ever been” because of James’ decision to focus on “fighting Trump” instead of crime.
  • National Review said James’ lawsuit was making “a mountain of the Trump molehill” and “smacks of the political hackery for which James is now notorious.”
  • The Wall Street Journal picked up Trump Organization’s statement responding to the lawsuit. A Trump Organization lawyer said the lawsuit was “the culmination of nearly three years of persistent, targeted, unethical political harassment” by the New York state attorney general.

  • Tish James, what a waste. I have to agree with the majority of people. Tish James is looking for the big pay out for herself from the Democrats and the Biden regime. She, Tish James wants to be in Washington DC to rub elbows with the rest of the cronies and get her Share of the tax payers money. People believe that she is feeling left out. But what she needs to do is focus on the crime that is running wild in her New York Streets. But there is something about that city that make people run a muck, like they can’t help themselves. So much evil there . Like they have a big dark cloud just hanging over them that just won’t go away , kinda like DC has . I hope that they remember, what you sow, you will reap . Just like what goes around comes around and 99% of the time it does .

  • Don’t these democrats realize they only make Trump look better with each attempt to smear him… Another witch hunt waste of tax dollars
